The Program

Over the 5 days, Warren Backhouse will guide riders through a structured program,  each day building on the skills and knowledge gained in the day before.  Each day riders get individual tuition plus an opportunity for riding time on their own to consolidate what they have learnt.

Day 1 covers circles and the basic drills needed to get a balanced circle, correctly positioned horse and smooth lead departures.

Day 2 covers lead changes.  Often the most frustrating part of a program, Warren offers a clear explanation of the mechanics of lead changes and provides a variety of exercises to help the rider on the way to smooth transitions.

Day 3 covers turn-arounds. Warren breaks the turn-around into simple steps, focusing on correct hoof placement.  Even horses and riders who have never done a turn-around will be well on the way after this instruction.

Day 4 covers roll-backs.  Using the skills developed over the previous three days, Warren helps the rider to put them together to accomplish slick roll-backs.

Day 5 covers stopping, showmanship and a pattern.  Warren explains the fundamentals of a stopping program and gives riders the opportunity to identify how they will get their horse ready to perform a sliding stop.

In a very useful session for the beginner or seasoned reiner, Warren shares his knowledge of showmanship and answers questions about what to look out for on show day.

The Grand Finale is putting all the lessons learned together and running a pattern.  Riders have the opportunity to run a pattern with Warren giving advice from the side-lines.  This is an invaluable exercise and one that riders do not often have a chance to participate in.
